The Fire

Regional Introductions just about over. Can't wait for this NSSBC to fire up.

Word from Pullman

The official qualifiers are 2010 PNWRC Host Washington State in 1st Place...I've received word that Idaho State finished 2nd Overall but will not be able to attend the NSSBC in West Lafayette as the Bengals did not compete in the technical paper...The University of British Columbia finished in 3rd overall (take note Paperny Films!)...and now your humble narrator needs clarification to see if the Moscow Vandals have thus qualified with their 4th place finish since Idaho State is not eligible to attend Nats. Good job all!

Clarification in....as are Vandals!!! U da ho, NO, U DA HO! Ha ha, Iupati to the 49ers.

Ohio Valley

I'd say it's almost a definite that Akron took a spot down in Kentucky. They could be the stiffest bridge in the nation. Youngstown and Ohio State also look to be somewhat strong...both, for separate reasons. Any official placements feel free to comment OV.

It seems Akron, Hawai'i, Cal and perhaps a few others not known about are among the best for stiffness at the moment.

So's this guy:

If I had to bet...

...I'd say Washington State, Oregon State, UBC maybe UAF for the PNWRC. Pullman was gorgeous today.

Insane design...I'm sure it's the only one of it's kind in the 2010 NSSBC.

San Jose State Slider

Competition day for the Spartans through a slideshow. Though it ended badly, we were all thankfully reminded, as with all competing schools, that MID-PAC would be absolutely meaningless without the Spartans there competing and cheering everybody on!

A bit of a shock but it appears the University of Buffalo have won the Upstate New York Regional Competition in Steel Bridge.

Linkytwo

From the Spartan Daily in San Jose

for what it's worth...(not sure if there's more somewhere in there)

The SJSU Steel Bridge Team's hopes for placing at the 2010 Mid-Pacific
Regional Conference were dashed when its bridge suffered a structural failure,
resulting in its collapse. Team captains Andrew Veggian and Qais Lodin began
initial designs of the bridge, nicknamed "Tank" because of it's resemblance to
the military vehicle, in Fall 2009, Lodin said.

For the Record...

...from Troy.

Regarding the rest...

...universally, there are some conferences that this blog never hears from, so the expectations couldn't be any lower for some, but if anybody else out there has PLACEMENTS...detailed results not needed...of Overall Conference points, Steel Bridge, Canoe, commentary, whatever, we'd love to have 'em here to share, so we can all get a feel for who will be GOING BIG OR GOING HOME this Memorial Day. To those MidPac qualifiers, here you go...don't worry Sons of California isn't down here twice (lol):

Live (10 hours later) from Chico!!!

SPECIAL CONGRATS TO THE UNIVERSITY OF THE PACIFIC FOR SHOWING UP WITH A BRIDGE THIS SEASON. BIG STOCK WAS IN THE HOUSE, GO TIGERS!

Mid-Pac Rules Again, be it spirit or all-around project and technical prowess, hands down lovin' me the students of NorCal and Reno.

Steel Bridge

Overall

1st - UC Berkeley

2nd - UC Davis
3rd - Chico State

Lightness - UC Davis
Aesthetics - UC Berkeley
Speed - UC Davis
Stiffness - UC Berkeley
Economy - UC Davis
Efficiency - UC Berkeley

It was pretty close overall, and while I firmly believe the Aggies have the most room to improve, I wouldn't put it past Cal and it's highly unique design concept, to challenge for a top 3 spot at Purdue. Chico State showed a lot of heart, if they can string together a couple of seasons with some carryover, they could begin to start challenging again for some awards and a top 2 spot at MidPac, which will be at Big Sac next spring. The hosting job was unbelievable by Chico, the people were extremely friendly and civil, and the MidPac Spirit lives on!

Concrete Canoe

Overall

1st - Nevada, Reno
2nd - San Jose State
3rd - UC Davis

Design Paper - San Jose State
Races - Nevada, Reno
Oral Presentation - San Jose State
Final Product -
Nevada, Reno

The story of the day Friday morning was Cal's medieval inspired canoe failing during the first endurance race. It was an unrecoverable blow to their final score as both, the 300, and the Bossy Cow Cows were able to leap frog da Bears in the Overall. Dramatic yes, but this is how we all learn unfortunately. Regardless, San Jose State and the Wolf Pack are headed to San Luis Obispo...and you know what that means...the most spirited duo of juggernauts are gonna be sounding it off all over the beach! SPIRIT BELL INVITED!!!

Water Treatment

1st - UC Berkeley
2nd - Cal Poly, SLO
3rd - UC Davis

Apparently, there will now be a NATIONAL WATER TREATMENT COMPETITION to be held this year (not sure where) in June. Any and everybody who has competed in the WTC should look to MidPac and ASCE/AGC members etc. etc. for the information needed in order to submit your papers and projects. Cool, cool stuff brewing this season.

1st Place Overall

Canoe news from the Midwest...

...as far as the races were concerned it was all Nevada, Reno and San Jose State (with some UC Davis mixed in there)...the canoe from Cal broke in half during the first endurance race, as did the Chico canoe.

Wowzers

A lot of regional conferences really go all out and NSSBC-like to host their region, perhaps MidPac is a hair behind in that regard. The weather in Chico was beautiful today...campus was buzzing.

Word from Chromesville

So far so good, a few days out 'til MidPac only minor modifications yet to do and the times are where they should be for a Regional. Looking much better than Reno 2K9 for the West Coast Aggies this year. Good luck to all those competing this weekend...hopefully, it'll bring you good fortune, friends and weather!

It's Official...
