Bah-Hummmm-Back

Yeah, so I'm sorta back...I might check on Portland State here and there...seeing as I've got more access to the Viks right now than the UC Davis Aggies. Don't expect too much from me, I'm trying to land employment...so my time will be a little every which way in December between family and the hunt. Merry Friggin' Christmas, don't freeze your nipples off.

Okay...

...I know this blog has been off a bit, because, well, your humble narrator is working his ASS OFF! All that said, I feel it a privilege to capture the attention of the Steel Bridge Community.

I admire, and love you all. This is not an easy competition to undertake, nor is it an easy competition to be successful at. So, as you embark on this trip of all trips, remember, it ain't about how you place, it's about the journey. Journey well, and leave comments about what you excpect to achieve this season...don't forget to leave your name and your University. It's all about Pride and being true to your school.

God Bless. (Atheists and Agnostics Included)

Sunday, September 6, 2009

All ye semester schools, get your time in early, for the Ags don't start school for three weeks...at which time the formal process will start, but no doubt, the analysis is well on its way for a solid bid at the 2010 crown!

Best of Luck to you all.

Um, Yeah.

These are going to be some of the funkiest pieces ever put on a Steel Bridge. I suggest modeling components in 3D, see where they fit, check your tolerances, and just play with it until it gets deeper and deeper (that's what she said)...

...intended for a Judging audience...however it shows some Assembly of Virginia Tech and Washington State...who, I have to say, SORRY to, they had some great runs that got lost in the mix. There's just too much to film at the NSSBC!

Quimby's been working hard...

...Alaska Bart has a highly updated NSSBC.info page.

http://www.nssbc.info/

"The Rules Committee comes under pressure regularly from competitors and sponsors to outlaw expensive steels, such a Chromalloy because there is a perception that somehow these steels give an unfair advantage to chapters with money to spend. When the rules committee can find a way to outlaw such material that is enforceable we probably will. Writing an enforceable rule restricting the type of steel has proven to be difficult.

These expensive steels seem to be used primarily because they can be obtained in lighter sections. They have generally the same stiffness (i.e. same Modulus of Elasticity, E) as other steels so they don't have a real impact on stiffness. In fact going to lighter sections may have a detrimental impact on stiffness (because of reduced AE or EI). They do come in higher tensile strengths than some of the other steels however the strength levels required by most members is minimal so there's not a huge savings here either. You might also note that if member strength is based on buckling then tensile strength is a non-issue and higher strength steels have no advantage over lower strength steels in this case. In the end, we find some very competitive bridges at the national competition that do not use these steels."

4130 Alloy has no advantage whatsoever. Though most 4130 suppliers have great size selection and wall thicknesses for the competition...and for all the whiney bitch Student Chapters who say they don't have enough money...get off your ass and go seek it out, well funded Teams do every year...there isn't a silver spoon that feeds the Ags in Davis, nor the Badgers in Madison, nor the Gators in Florida, nor the Bears in Berkeley, nor the Roos in Canton, you have to work your butt off to get funding...so don't go whining about how another Team is working harder than you.

also, for the record..."Chromium Molybdenum" aka "Chrome Moly"...Chromalloy will be seen on every 20 and 22 down in South Central, South Sac, Del Paso Heights, Long Beach, Alameda, Oakland and Reno.

Almost there...

...I think we're on the brink here, stand by for 2010 Rules Disclosure...

The Topic on the Right...Which Countries'...is an important topic...we goin' global with this baby. NSSBC Board, you need an international ambassador...how about your humble narrator in Davis??? ha ha ha. Seriously though, this is too good a competition to leave it to the trailblazing, forward thinking, obviously free in so many ways other countries are not, North Americans to do on their own.

Man...

...I got nothing right now, nothing. Uh, the mountain sun is hot in North Lake Tahoe...that's about it. Fuck, not much. August can't come too soon eh? (Canadians wink wink).

Good Idea/Bad Idea

Sort through them now...when school starts, the time starts approaching zero.

Full House

Modern Steel Construction weighs in on the NSSBC.

Articulus

"We get the cream of the crop every year, and they get to compete against each other. You can't get any more real-world than this." - JP

ha ha ha, uhhhhhh, let's see if this were the real world...SUNY Canton would get the contract, have steady work for a while, be able to feed their kids, and the rest of the teams would be bidding their asses off for the next one, hoping to make some kind of a profit in this shitty economy...not celebrating the end of the Competition with moral victories. also...super-steel would never be used, because it's, uh, expensive and would SO be included in the bid. In fact, let's make it REAL, real world and take the judges out to dinner the night before the competition, get real friendly, and then boom...no penalty right there baby, yeah no big deal, carry on.

...but the Miners at Missouri S&T, had a funky little arch/stack sorta Bridge in the Mid-Con... will only say this once...ARCHES ARE SHIT WITHOUT RIGID ABUTMENTS...so if you're Bridge is freestanding and has no real moment resistance at the pier supports, it will bend and dip all over the place. TENSION ONLY, and even then...maybe!!!

Les Verticales

Couldn't help but notice, and it may be that it has been repeated, but all Top 3 finishes this year from Vegas had vertical chords in their Bridges...typically it's a useless chord, but with certain loading scenarios and member configurations it defintely serves a good purpose. Could be on a multi-vertical rigid frame ala Cal in 2008, or in a strategic location on an underslung like SUNY Canton, NDSU and Lakehead in 2009. Food for thought.

The Last 9 Years...

From a Mid-Pac point of view, hosting, until recently, has only been done by an ASCE Student Chapter with strong conviction...now, nobody is getting out of it.

2001 - UC Davis
2002 - San Jose State
2003 - Fresno State
2004 - Nevada Reno
2005 - Big Sac
2006 - Cal
2007 - San Jose State/Santa Clara
2008 - UC Davis
2009 - Nevada Reno
2010 - Chico...

There's no hiding it now, if the wee, yet extremely enthusiastic, ASCE Student Chapter at Fresno State can host, it's time for the other "smaller" chapters to ante up and take on the responsibility. San Francisco State, Stanford, Pacific, Humboldt...you're next!

Has Regional hosting been an issue for you? Have schools limped their way out of it 'cause they don't have the stomach to host the big Annual...thoughts please.

Also, which port are ye headed to next Spring???

G/D @ Shoreline

San Luis Obispo or West Lafayette?

Okay, SLO friggin' sacked up and got the NCCC at one of the prime locations in all of California. Right by the coast near Pismo, a first class civil engineering program, awesome food, hot chicks all over the place, hot guys all over the place, about an hour from some of the best Pinot Noir country in the world...we've got to head to...Indiana. What, is Chicago too busy?

Purdue, you better be so damn first class all the way!!! You better be the most hospitable motherfuckas in the world, so that come that Sunday, NOBODY wants to leave, they just want to stay and have more fun. Also, and this is a MUST, there better be an open bar at the banquet, Cal State Northridge style (minus the drunk San Francisco State guys in the back making fun of a Cal Team that kicked their ass). Okay, the specifications have been set Boilermakers...what you lack on coastal beauty you better make up for in hospitality, brew, broads, parties and energy.
